Wilderness Lean-To by Nutnfancy: Part 1

PART 1 OF ?: Building a lean-to wilderness shelter in snowy and cold conditions…good times! There are numerous shelters that you can construct in these northern, mountainous woods and this is one of them. It does require a fair amount of time, calories, and preferably some tools to get the job done. But the task itself is relatively simple. Many topics are discussed including the survival mindset and training, site selection, construction techniques, knife and tool usage (and breakage!), clothing and glove considerations, flashlights (Fenix L2D), common sense environmentalism, food procurement, etc. Conditions were adequately challenging with temperatures eventually dropping to 18F and snow continually falling. Allie the Mountain was the faithful companion on the outing.

  • This is a great video. It’s clear you are very knowledgeable about wilderness survival situations. This video is very informative, and was fun to watch. One question, though: How do you find the time to do this?! :)

  • Hey Man! Love your videos. I’ll come out there and be your camera man! I love those conditions…guess I’m as nuts as you…LOL!

  • thx :D

  • Hey Nutn’…why do you care what the tools out there comment about?? I’m sure the vast majority of us just watch and enjoy your stuff. Screw em.

  • social – Nutn says that it is a Moonstone GorTex shell..bought on sale in 1996 from Mtn Gear in Spokane. It was around $125. For something similar, he stays try Campmor (. ) com. — Veri (Nutn’s sister)

  • That’s an awesome jacket you’re wearing, any info on who makes it? (The thin one which can cover most of your face)

  • Not sure if Nutn has any in depth ones yet about his dog. However in his High sky’s series he talks a little about it. For instance his dog has a backpack and among other things carries her own food and water.

If you find more let me know as well. Thanks

  • Might you make more videos concerning dog care on long hikes, such as overnight care(ie:is she tied at night)..does she carry her own food and water?how did you train her to stay close without a lead?what about long term paw care in wet or snow?

  • Great upload, great info

  • man, I dig this.. I might have to give something like this a try. Ive been wanting to try and “survive off the land” if you will for like a week and take nothing but the basic tools and maybe a fishing pole and survive for a good amount of time and build shelter and whatnot

  • what is the knife you use

  • Thanks again for the great videos, keep ignoring all the trolls, haters, armchair experts and the keyboard warriors!
    :)

  • dude…i so would like to maybe, idk,…audition for cameraman…id so be more than excited to be out there doin this with someone i could learn so much from!!

  • “OOOOOOH yeah baby”

  • what does bivwak stand for?

  • I live in the lower eastern half of michigan and I so want to find a spot where I can hike in and camp and that is sort of off the beaten path, I do have a prob though im 28 and have a rod in the right leg from breaking it twice and my knees are shot but I will trudge on and deal with it even though i have chronic pain. but the expirence would be worth the pain. Im looking for like a 2mi hike in to camp and 2mi hike out on the other side. I think it would be kool.

  • i have been hiking and camping by myself in stuff like that and all i have to say is that your in great shape cuz it can get very tiring when you have to care the backpack and everything and im 15. and i really like your vids
